I have been working through the problems with the Canon MP730 Scanner driver recently. Please see my page at http://waddles.org/content/sane-canon-mp730-driver

Unfortunately, the major fix will not be included in SANE 1.0.20 so you will need to apply the patches yourself.

Installing Ubuntu then installing the KDE metapackage is just a good/better in my mind. You get the best of both worlds in one installation. Just choose at the logon screen which environment you want to use.

Hi, I submitted this comment earlier, but it didn't stick. Maybe I did something wrong (forgot to hit submit?). I'm wondering if you could share some details of your experience with tytool in ubuntu? I find most of it works just fine except when I get ready to create the dvd structure using the IFO edit option. At this point it starts attempting to invoke a lot of external programs and running dvdauthor (which ironically is a linux native program being run with cygwin) from an autogenerated bat file. This kludgey process doesn't seem to work within wine. Any suggestions? If you could post details in your blog or to my email address (junkmael99@gmail.com) I would appreicated it. Google has been very stingy on this topic :-(.

Some issues you mentioned:

You had to reinstall with server mode in order to not load X:
Actually, when grub loads up and you get to pick which kernel you want to use, hit 'e' to enter the edit mode. Then append '1' at the end of your kernel options. That will boot you up into a 'safe mode' of sorts. (Recovery Mode may be the same thing, but I've never tried it).

You couldn't find nautilus:
Nautilus is the browser. So every window you open for handling files _is_ nautilus.

Couldn't edit apps menu:
You should be able to (on my dad's windows laptop, atm, so this is from memory) go to 'View' => 'Location' to get a location bar in which you can type 'applications:///' to get to reorganize your apps menu. Your best bet is to open up a browser as root and do this.

sudo nautilus -browser applications:///

Additionally, if you dislike the new window opening every single time you click a folder, go to 'Edit' => 'Preferences' and choose 'Open New Windows in Browser' or something like that.
Some more tips here:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gnome_Desktop_Admin_Guide

Don't worry, Novell is really working on enhancing things like that, I would expect it to be much more intuitive next year.

I hope that helps.

If you have any questions about linux in general or gnome feel free to contact me - I'm fairly well versed. I use Gentoo as my main OS, Ubuntu as my second, and Windows as occasion requires. I was a Windows guy back a year or two ago, and I would say that I know EVERYTHING about XP as a workstation (minus some of the undocumented command-line tools)

Just google coolaj86 and you can find all my info.
